Miniature Games

MICRO UNIVERSE

A very simple collectible miniatures game that plays like Hero Clix or Top Trumps with a die. Each figure has a number of characteristics with a numerical value. Choose a characteristic, roll the spinner (a die replacement shaped like the Tardis console) and add the result to the characteristic's value. Your opponent rolls and adds the same characteristic from his figure and the highest wins that combat. No movement rules included despite this being a miniatures game.

Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures Game

The Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures Game (DDM) is a collectible skirmish miniatures wargame game played with pre-painted, plastic miniature figures based on characters and monsters from the Dungeons & Dragons games. Released in September of 2003 by Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro, DDM is composed of loosely themed sets that are released roughly every 4 months.

All figures are designated as being a  "common",  "uncommon", or  "rare" piece. This rarity determines the odds of obtaining each piece within a pre-packaged expansion pack or starter set. By making certain pieces of higher worth to be less available, DDM has a collectible component similar to collectible trading card games such as Magic: The Gathering (also published by Wizards of the Coast).

Unlike Dungeons & Dragons, which like most role-playing games has players playing the part of a single character, the Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures Game is a miniatures wargame in which two opponents pit armies of units against each other. In order to allow rule adjudication without a Dungeon Master, the DDM rules are simplified from Dungeons & Dragons' combat system, with a few additional features unique to the skirmish game.
The Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures Game also currently serves as Hasbro's official line of miniature figures for the Dungeons & Dragons game.

The basis for HeroClix is a set of collectable miniature figures used to play the game. The figures are collectable outside the game for their sculpting and the vast number of characters they represent. There are a total of 150 characters in the game, but many are different versions of the same character using the same sculpt. Most of the characters are available in three experience levels - rookie, experienced and veteran. The more experienced the character, the more powerful he is and also the more rare is that particular figure compared with its weaker versions. There are 46 sculpts that each have three experience levels in the game, and the experience levels are denoted by the color of the ring around the figures base. Yellow is a rookie figure, blue denotes experienced, and the veteran characters have a red ring.

With the addition of the playmat, HeroClix is easy to play - like a board game. Built into the base of the Heroclix, the combat dial keeps track of damage that the piece has taken. The combat dial eliminates the need for charts and tables and does the work for the player as it is turned, making the game very accessible. Additionally, the base has the character's information right on it, including point value and so forth.

In 2002, WizKids released MechWarrior: Dark Age, a collectible miniature-based wargame similar to Heroclix and Mage Knight, distinct from the BattleTech wargame. In 2003, MechWarrior: Dark Age won the Origins Awards for Best Illustration 2002, Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Miniatures Series 2002 and Game of the Year 2002. In 2005, WizKids updated MechWarrior: Dark Age. In conjunction with a rules overhaul, the game was renamed MechWarrior: Age of Destruction.

The Mechwarrior sets released so far are: Dark Age, Fire for Effect, Death from Above, Liao Incursion, Counterassault, Falcon's Prey, Age of Destruction, Firepower, Annihlilation, Domination, Vanguard and Wolf Strike. WizKids has also announced the release of action packs in the future, which will be non-randomized sets of figures, instead of continuing their system of randomized boosters. So far, these include the Champions Action Pack Volume I and II, as well as 4 upcoming Solaris VII Action Packs.

Star Wars Miniature Starship Battles

This is the name for the stand-alone space combat game, released in November 2006. This game is centered around starship combat. Players control starships (fighters and capital ships) rather than individual characters. The Starter set includes the Super Star Destroyer Executor (from the Galactic Civil War Era) and the Mon Calamari Star Defender Viscount (from the New Jedi Order Era) along with eight randomized ships. The boosters contain 7 randomized ships from all eras. There are 60 different ships to collect. In this new expansion, different rules apply. Squads are divided into a Dark or Light side faction, and recommended squad size in a free-for-all is about 300 points.
